I’m recently retired. I live alone. I’m 63. I’m looking for a little puppy that I could take care of. And love I’m new in gulf shores I don’t really know any places to adopt one. I don’t have hundreds to spend. Can you help me?

Hi there! Thank you so much for sharing a little about yourself — and congratulations on your retirement! It’s heartwarming to hear you’re ready to welcome a new furry friend into your life. Puppies bring so much love, joy, and companionship, and it sounds like you’re going to be a wonderful dog parent.
Since you’re in Gulf Shores and are mindful of budget, I’d recommend checking out local shelters or rescue organizations — many of them have low adoption fees or even waived fees for seniors. A few places to start might be:
South Baldwin Animal Hospital (they often know about adoptable pets in the area)
The Haven in Fairhope, a no-kill shelter not too far from you
Adopt-a-Pet.com or Petfinder.com – you can search by location and filter by breed and size
As for breeds, considering your lifestyle, I’d recommend looking for small to medium-sized breeds that are known for being affectionate and relatively easy to care for. Some great companions for retirees include:
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – gentle, loving, and calm
Shih Tzu – small, affectionate, and doesn’t need too much exercise
Poodle (Toy or Miniature) – smart, loyal, and hypoallergenic
Mixed breeds (sometimes called “mutts”) – they can be just as wonderful and are often healthier too!
If you’re open to an adult dog rather than a puppy, that can be an even better match — they’re often calmer, house-trained, and still incredibly loving.
